When’s the last time you sat down and truly savored that bite you took of the food you were eating?
Well, for me, when I really look back on my life, I probably never savored a bite of food.
Like, chewed it nice and slow and tasted all the flavors that one bite provided.
Well, I know I did when I was a kid. Have you seen children eat? They take their time!! Something we adults need to do more often!
But, there was this one time in my adult life…the year I was learning to become a Health Coach at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Oh man, my friends and I learned to art of slowing down when eating and we used to take one square of chocolate and let it just melt in our mouths. It tasted like heaven, but man, was it hard to do. All I wanted to do every time was chomp chomp chomp it as fast I could.
So when I say, savor, and you’re not sure what I mean, let me ask you something, have you ever seen the movie Ratatouille?
At the beginning of the movie, he takes one bite of cheese, he closes his eyes and he tastes the flavor of that one bite of cheese and he’s smiling as he is so present with his one bite of cheese. Then he takes a bite of a strawberry. He does the same, smiles, closes his eyes and he’s 100% present with the flavor that strawberry provides him. Then he takes one bite with the cheese combined with the strawberry and closes his eyes again and fireworks start going off around him as he’s 100% present with both the combined flavors of the cheese and the strawberry.
Now, that my friends, is truly SAVORING one bite of food!! Oh yeah!!
I’m a little young in this picture. Ha! Please be patient with me until I get an updated picture of my older, food loving, self! :)
Hi…I’m Renee!
I’m a Journalism degree graduate (GO GATORS!), a proud (now retired) Coast Guard wife, a mom to two kiddos (a big sis and a lil’ bro), a former elementary school teacher (2nd, 3rd and ESOL K-12), a Certified Holistic Health Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, a Certified Creative Coach and an aspiring professional photographer and food blogger.
I started this blog to create a space for me to document my journey to getting back in my kitchen and reigniting my love for cooking and baking, but, most of all, food photography.
I’ve loved food for as long as I can remember. If my parents made a dinner I didn’t like, I’d be in the kitchen whipping up some turkey tacos. When the holidays came around, I’d always be baking some type of cookie…Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip and any festive holiday cookie that sounded fun and delish!
As I got older, I became very passionate about health and nutrition, which led me to becoming a Holistic Health Coach. This is when I fell in love with seasonal eating and self-care.
Soon after becoming a Health Coach, I became a mom to my daughter. This is when I also connected, or shall I say, reconnected with my love for photography. I had always loved taking photos growing up, especially in high school, but once having my daughter, I truly felt how much I loved it and, because of that, I started to learn everything I could to taking better photos and I had a dream of pursing it professionally.
Right before having my son, I took a class on food photography and OMG I fell in love!
I was starting to really get into taking food photos, but then, slowly, as my mom years went on, I started not cooking and baking as much (I’ve basically been cooking and baking the same things over and over so I don’t have to think much) and my DSLR has been sitting the shelf collecting dust.
But, even though life started leading me away from my kitchen, I still never stopped dreaming of picking up my camera again and starting a food blog…and really, I still never stopped cooking.
I have a serious problem...I just can't stay away from making home cooked, seasonal meals. ;)
So now that my kids are older and I have a tad bit more time on my hands (just a tad..ha!), I’m ready to get back in my kitchen and pick up my DSLR again!
I want to get out of my food rut and make new foods for my family and I and I want to start diving into my passion again for all things food photography! And I want to document it all here. Yay!!
So my intention is to share what I’m cooking and baking (hopefully on a weekly basis!…my goal is to cook and bake one new recipe a week!) and my journey of getting back to learning all things food photography all while slowing down to SAVOR it all!
So basically, my goal is to get out my food rut and pick up my DSLR and start doing more of what I love again…cook and bake new and old foods I love and photograph the beauty of it all and share it all here!
But the hardest goal of all is slowing down to actually taste and savor that bite of food I take once it’s cooked, baked and photographed. Because let me tell ya, one of the hardest things that I’ve come across is actually chewing that one bite and focusing on it.
It’s like once I put that one bite in my mouth, not even two chews in, I’m already putting another bite in my mouth.
And since having my kiddos, all I’ve dreamt about is having a nice, candle lit dinner with music playing and where I get sit and savor every little bite for longer than two seconds. Ha!
I want that in my life!
And I want to SAVOR that bite in my life, too!! Every single bite, again!
Or, really, even for the first time, because it wasn’t until I became a mom that I truly connected to this. When I truly thought, I don’t think I ever actually savor that bite before. And since life started moving faster than ever after becoming a mom, I want more than ever to eat slow and savor every single bite I take!
Because when I don’t, I missing out on so much flavor and beauty that went into that meal and recipe.
It’s easy to stop and savor a moment…but I want to be easier for me to stop and savor that bite, too!
Because food is amazing and meant to be savored, just like everything in life!
So here I AM! A newbie again, so please be gentle with me. Ha!
I can’t wait to see where my food blog and food photography journey takes me! Woohoo!
